My stickman archer seemed equally unimpressed. He wobbled, I adjusted my mouse, and an enemy arrow arrived before I could pretend the miss was a practice shot.

The controls were easy to grasp: aim with the mouse, draw the bow, release. It took me considerably longer to grasp where the arrow would actually land.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>I kept making the same mistake at first. I’d line up a shot that looked perfect, forget that gravity existed, and watch the arrow sail beneath my target. Then I’d compensate too much and send the next one on a tour of the upper half of the screen. Adjusting the angle and how much power I put behind a shot slowly became less guesswork, though I never reached the point where I could relax about it.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>That’s what makes this physics based archery game funny rather than merely fiddly. A slight change in aim can turn a clean hit into a humiliating miss. And even when an arrow connects, the ragdoll physics get the final word. An enemy might crumple in a way that makes my carefully planned shot look like an accident. To be fair, it often was.

I learned more from that defeat than from several successful shots. These days, I try to make a decent decision quickly instead of holding the bow while conducting a private geometry exam.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>I’ve also learned not to aim exactly where a moving target is standing. Leading the shot a little and allowing for the arrow’s drop works better, especially at a distance. I still miss, of course. The difference is that now I can usually tell which bad assumption was responsible.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>Then there are the apples drifting through a fight. At first, I treated them as scenery because I was busy trying not to get hit. Once I noticed they could restore health or stamina, shooting one became a welcome little detour. It’s oddly satisfying to land that smaller shot when the enemy has been making me look incapable of operating a bow.

Its simple controls let me jump back in without much thought, but the angles, shot power, and unpredictable character movements keep each attempt from feeling identical. A shot I expect to win can leave me exposed; a rushed arrow can somehow save me. I laugh at both, although I laugh louder when the accident works in my favor.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 0px !important;”>I like that the game doesn’t require me to be graceful. My stickman archer certainly isn’t. On a computer, with a mouse in hand and no setup beyond opening a browser tab, I can spend a few minutes testing a better angle, making a fresh mistake, and trying again. If that sounds like your kind of break, give it a shot. Just don’t ask me to demonstrate where to aim.
