You know, like sipping cocoa while a sled glides peacefully down a snowy hill. Instead, I got my first obstacle about three seconds in, and my brain immediately switched from relaxed to survival mode.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>It’s weird how fast that happens. One minute I’m confident, smug even, thinking I can totally handle a snow sled game that looks simple. The next minute I’m making tiny steering corrections like I’m guiding a shopping cart through a crowded grocery store where everyone is also screaming. Snow Rider might look cartoony, but the second the slope gets busy, it feels like downhill racing with a ten-second delay between your brain and your hands.

Your job is steering. That sounds calm until you realize the game is constantly asking, “Hey, what would you like to crash into next?” The answer is usually “not the thing directly in front of me,” but apparently my reflexes disagree.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>I keep getting ambushed by obstacles that appear with the confidence of someone who knows I’m about to mess up. Trees show up like they’re personally offended I thought this was chill. Rocks are positioned in the exact places my eyes refuse to process until it’s too late. Fences feel especially rude because they interrupt your rhythm, like a speed bump designed by a comedian with an evil streak.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>Then there are the snowmen and snowballs. At first, I treated them like harmless scenery. Big mistake. A snowball becomes a problem instantly, and a snowman feels like it should be decorative until you’re swerving around it like it’s the boss of a winter game.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>And every failure has the same emotional arc for me: I swerve, I think I avoided it, I see one obstacle pass… and then I immediately run into another one right after. It’s like the game punishes me for blinking.

The early stretch makes you think you’ve got the hang of it. Then the obstacles start coming closer together, and suddenly you can’t just react. You have to anticipate.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>This is where I start noticing my own habits. When I get nervous, I overcorrect. I’ll make one smooth steering move, then panic and yank the sled in the opposite direction like I’m trying to reverse time. The game punishes that immediately. If I hesitate too long, I eat a rock. If I thrash around, I plow into the next obstacle like I’m auditioning for a slapstick routine.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>So I try to adjust. I force myself to look farther ahead instead of staring at what’s directly in front of the sled. When I do that, my dodges feel cleaner. My brain stops trying to solve the problem after it becomes a problem and starts treating the next couple seconds like a plan, not a mystery.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>It’s also oddly satisfying when it works. You slip between obstacles, thread the slope without overthinking, and you get a streak going. For a moment, I’m convinced I’m the kind of person who has control over their life. Then, of course, I get greedy, make one unnecessary adjustment, and lose to something incredibly dumb—like a fence that I absolutely would’ve avoided if I’d just calmed down and kept a steady line.

It’s a browser game, which means I can start it whenever I’ve got a spare minute and tell myself I’ll stop after one run. That plan lasts about as long as it takes for the slope to throw a tree into my path.

      <p style=”–tw-border-spacing-x: 0; –tw-border-spacing-y: 0; –tw-translate-x: 0; –tw-translate-y: 0; –tw-rotate: 0; –tw-skew-x: 0; –tw-skew-y: 0; –tw-scale-x: 1; –tw-scale-y: 1; –tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; –tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; –tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; –tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 / .5); –tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; –tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000; box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.96); font-family: D-DINExp, ‘DM Sans’, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ‘Segoe UI’, Roboto, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Arial, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif, ‘Apple Color Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Emoji’, ‘Segoe UI Symbol’, ‘Noto Color Emoji’; font-size: 14px;”>It’s also just fun in that “watch your skill meet chaos” way. The game looks light and silly, but it demands focus. You’re constantly balancing quick decisions with not making things worse. That tension is exactly why I want to restart. Every time I crash, I tell myself, “Okay, next run I’ll steer earlier, slower, smarter.” And then my hands do something else entirely—because apparently I’m committed to learning through humiliation.

I’ll be here, about to hit play again, pretending this time my reflexes have improved.
