When infertility is caused by a lack of ovulation, Letrozole works by inhibiting estrogen production, which causes ovulation when the body detects a low estrogen level and stimulates hormone synthesis. Letrozole can be taken alone to treat ovulatory infertility, as well as unexplained infertility. Letrozole may be administered during an IVF cycle to help control the menstrual cycle and increase the likelihood of successful ovulation and fertilization. It can also improve the response to gonadotropin medicines, which are frequently used in IVF treatment. Women who use Femara (Letrozole) ovulate about 7-10 days after starting medication. Fertility specialists will begin monitoring the patient’s follicle growth after 5-7 days to determine when she will begin ovulating.
